Who are you?
Lead Software Engineer is the development experts for their Product Delivery Team and have in-depth knowledge of the platform, our tech stack, and processes. You stay current in the latest Engineering trends and are capable of designing and implementing complex SaaS solutions. You know dependencies with underlying systems and can fix issues in the system interfaces. In addition to developing and solving complex tasks, they aid in prioritizing development stories, provide estimates and create subtasks to implement product features within the sprint. You take high ownership in production issues that arise and actively work to a timely resolution. You aid in architecture decisions for the development framework, perform code reviews, and promote coding standards and adherence to SOPs with a mindset of continual improvement.

 

In this role you will wear many hats, but your knowledge will be essential in the following:

  • Technical expert in the design, development, and testing of new platform features, components, and enhancements
  • Domain, codebase, and development process subject-matter expert
  • Demonstrates ownership for development across the team
  • Provide technical solutions and implementation details to complex features
  • Ability to lead in software architecture discussions and set technical direction
  • Provide technical leadership and coaching to more junior team members
  • Perform code reviews
  • Identify and come up with strategies to resolve technical debt
  • Demonstrates high ownership in resolving production issues

What you bring to the Virgin Pulse team

  • 5 or more years of Android development experience
  • A solid understanding of best practices for software development including testing, monitoring, and design
  • Ability to go beyond the functional solution to build maintainable and well-tested code
  • Ability to partner closely with product managers to refine the product
  • Ability to articulate and champion design strategies related to scalability, maintainability, performance, security and usability
  • Outstanding problem solving skills and a solid grasp of object-oriented programming
  • Solid understanding of the full development life cycle
  • Strong communication skills, openness to collaborate, and enthusiasm to deliver as a part of a team
  • A passion and drive for learning technologies and applying them pragmatically
  • An ability to lead a technical discussion and the openness to listen and learn from your peers
  • Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions
  • Expert in Android development using Kotlin and Java
  • Extensive experience with RESTful APIs and API design techniques
  • Extensive experience with writing Unit and Instrumented tests
  • Familiarity with Agile/Kanban and Scrum methodologies
  • In-depth knowledge of Android operating system and lifecycle
  • Deep understanding of Android’s design principles
  • Knowledge of Android SDK performance tools and optimization techniques
  • Experience with internationalization and accessibility
  • Experience with command-line tools and debugging
  • Proficient understanding of Gradle scripts and Maven
  • Knowledge of Material Design Guidelines

  • Experience with core Android Jetpack architecture components (Navigation, Room, LiveData etc.)
  • Experience with reactive programming (RxJava, Kotlin Coroutines)
  • Knowledge of clean architecture and clean code principles
  • Experience with continuous integration/continues delivery
  • Experience with common Android architectures (MVC, MVVM or MVI)
  • Experience with Google Play console and application publishing
  • Experience with Gradle build system and Android Debug Bridge
  • Experience with offline storage, multithreading, and performance tuning
  • Experience with dependency injection frameworks such as Dagger or Hilt
  • Familiar with Bluetooth, NFC or other short distance wireless communication technologies

Continuous Integration and Deployment is part of our DNA.  We structure our applications as microservices and manage each deployment pipeline using containers, GitLab, and Harness.  We strive for layered approach to unit, integration, functional tests to allow for lower risk releases at rates 100s of times per day to multiple environments.

 

You’ll be working on a platform that serves:

  • Several million users with nearly 50% use daily
  • 75 billion API calls and transactions a year spread across 35 services
  • An engaging native mobile platform driving 85% of user traffic
  • Hundreds of terabytes of data spread across multiple transactional and analytical stores

Engineers at Virgin Pulse work in small autonomous teams of technical leads, product owners, project managers, designers, and engineers collaborating with each other, across teams, to deliver unique solutions and products to the portfolio.  As part of our team, you bring to the table your technical and leadership skills to help us build the latest technology in health and wellness platforms.

 

Security Competencies:

Work to ensure system and data security is maintained at a high standard, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the Virgin Pulse application is not compromised. Ensure industry best practice coding standards are adhered to ensure all code developed at Virgin Pulse is free from bugs and security vulnerabilities, such as those defined and published by OWASP.
